Edward Regan "Eddie" Murphy (born April 3, 1961) is the voice of Donkey in the Shrek series. However, in Scared Shrekless, he refused to reprise his role and was replaced by Dean Edwards, but was able to voice Donkey again in Donkey's Christmas Shrektacular.
History[]
Murphy was born Edward Regan Murphy in Brooklyn, New York on April 3, 1961. He was raised by his mother (and later his stepfather) in Roosevelt. By his teenage years, he was preforming his own stand-up comedy routines, based off of the work of Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor, and involving a lot of swearing and satirizing stereotypes. He preformed in clubs in the Bay area, eventually apologizing for his inappropriate comments. In the 1980s, he became a regular actor on Saturday Night Live and starred in his first feature film 48 Hours in 1982. Later, Murphy created two hit singles, Party All the Time and Put your Mouth on Me. He spent the rest of the decade making various films and was one of the last film actors to sign an exclusive studio contract (Paramount).
Though Murphy is best known for his roles such as Axel Foley in the Beverly Hills Cop series, Sherman Klump/Buddy Love in The Nutty Professor and John Dolittle in Dr. Dolittle, most of his movies have been box office failures. Since then, he has participated in several films, including all 5 Shrek films.
