Shrek doing his roar

The Ogre Roar is an ability and tactic used by Shrek to fend off angry mobs and other offending visitors. As the name implies, it is a powerful roar that can summon intense wind and force.

Shrek[]

The roar was first shown when Shrek is scaring away an angry mob in his swamp. After putting out one of the torches, he roars at the mob, scaring them. The roar is shown to be so powerful that the wind and spit can put out several torches at once. Shrek later tries to use another roar, albeit much weaker, on Donkey to try to scare him away.

Shrek 2[]

During Shrek and Fiona's argument about his behavior, telling him that he's acting like an ogre, he reinforces to her, "I am an ogre." He then proceeds to roar at the puppy dog, who cowers and covers his eyes.

Shrek Forever After[]

At the Candy Apple, Shrek is increasingly frustrated at his kids' birthday party. He is constantly pestered by Butter Pants and his father to "do the roar" for him. He continuously refuses, wanting to control his anger and not make a scene in front of his children. However, after being overwhelmed by his friends and the local villagers surrounding him and being loud, he lets out a giant ogre roar. Despite the intensity of the roar, everyone is overjoyed and cheering his name. This only causes Shrek to smash the spare birthday cake in frustration, silencing all the partygoers.

When Shrek returns to his normal reality, he finds himself at the party after he roared at everyone. Instead of getting increasingly angrier, he is happier than ever. His kids are then shown to try to do their own roars at each other.

Trivia[]

  • Shrek the Third is the only film where he doesn't do his roar. A scene where Shrek was reading "Little Red Riding Hood" to some kids at a nursery school and did his roar, accidentally scaring them, was fully realized, but was scrapped.
    • Mabel does however yell "roar" when she's performing Shrek's voice off-stage during Charming's play.
  • Despite Shrek saying "an ogre only roars when he's angry," the first time we see him roar was when he was teasing the angry mob. It is easy to assume that he wasn't really angry in that particular moment.
