The Rescue of Princess Fiona was an event that took place when Shrek and Donkey freed Fiona from her captivity in the Dragon's Keep.
Background[]
As a little girl, Fiona was cursed by a witch to turn into an ogre every night, the curse only being able to be broken by her true love's kiss. Her parents Queen Lillian and King Harold, then rulers of the kingdom of Far Far Away, sought the assistance of Fairy Godmother. Following her guidance, they locked Fiona away in the tallest tower of the Dragon's Keep to await her true love to rescue her. They had also agreed that Godmother's son Prince Charming would be the one to eventually rescue Fiona. Over the years many knights attempted to rescue her from her tower only to be slain by her guardian, Dragon. According to Shrek the Musical, Fiona was 7 years old at the time when she was locked away and spent a little over 23 years in the tower, making her around the age of 30 by the time of her rescue.
Shrek[]
The ruler of Duloc, Lord Farquaad, is told by the Magic Mirror that in order to be a king he first needs to marry a princess. He chooses Fiona but, unwilling to rescue her himself, holds a tournament whose winner will be sent to rescue her for him. Shrek interrupts the tournament and, with the help of Donkey, defeats the Duloc Knights and becomes the unexpected champion. Shrek makes a deal with Farquaad, agreeing to rescue Fiona in exchange for the removal of the fairytale creatures from his swamp. Shrek and Donkey travel for a day on foot and reach the Dragon's Keep.
Once inside the castle, Shrek puts on armor found on the bones of unsuccessful knights and tells Donkey to find the stairs to Fiona's tower while he searches for the dragon. Donkey accidentally awakens the dragon and Shrek is forced to fight it, only to be flung by its tail right through the roof of the tallest tower. While Donkey keeps the dragon occupied, Shrek meets Princess Fiona. Shrek is mistaken by Fiona to be her Prince Charming, though Shrek is all but chivalrous and romantic. Shrek yanks her out of bed, breaks down the barricaded door of her tower, and rushes through the castle with Fiona in tow.
Shrek leaves Fiona unattended to retrieve Donkey, who is busy fending off Dragon's affection. Carrying Donkey and Fiona with each arm, Shrek sprints for the exit while being chased by Dragon. The three nearly fall into the lava moat while running across the drawbridge when Dragon burns it down with her fire. Luckily, Shrek tethered Dragon to prevent her from pursuing them, accomplishing his task of rescuing Fiona.
Shrek 2[]
Prince Charming journeys on horseback to the Dragon's Keep, its bridge completely burnt and the castle seemingly abandoned by Dragon. Charming enters Fiona's tower expecting to rescue her only to find the Big Bad Wolf in her place, Wolf informs him that Fiona has already been rescued and is on her honeymoon with Shrek. When Fairy Godmother chastises Harold for Fiona having already been rescued, Harold responds that it was Charming's fault for taking so long to get there.
Shrek Forever After[]
It is revealed Harold and Lillian lost hope in Fiona being rescued, so they went to sign a contract with Rumpelstiltskin that would break Fiona’s curse. But just as they were about to sign, the news of Fiona's rescue had reached them and they tore up the contract. In the alternate universe where Shrek was never born and Fiona remained imprisoned, Harold and Lillian sign Rumpelstiltskin's deal. However the specific wording of the contract was that "all their problems would disappear", and after signing it they are turned into dust. Shrek runs back to the Dragon's Keep to find it abandoned by both Dragon and Fiona, Fiona's tiara having been left on her bed. Without Shrek to rescue her, Fiona spent many more years trapped in her tower with no knight able to rescue her. Fiona eventually gave up on waiting for her true love and broke herself out of the tower.
