"Welcome to Duloc" (or "What's Up, Duloc?" in Shrek the Musical) is a song that greets visitors when they pull the lever at the information booth in the Lordship of Duloc. It is sung by the wooden Duloc Dolls known as Clockwork Chorus.
First appearing in Shrek, the song was again seen in Scared Shrekless, although the lyrics had changed to a more Halloween theme due to the creepy atmosphere of the short film. After the song ends, the camera takes a picture.
Lyrics[]
Original[]
- Welcome to Duloc
- Such a perfect town
- Here we have some rules
- Let us lay them down
- Don't make waves, stay in line
- And we'll get along fine.
- Duloc is a perfect place.
- Please keep off of the grass
- Shine your shoes
- Wipe your...
- Face.
- Duloc is, Duloc is,
- Duloc is a perfect—
- place!
Scared Shrekless[]
- Welcome to Duloc
- It's a creepy town
- What was once pristine
- Now is all run down
- We will chop off your head
- And then laugh when you're dead
- Duloc is a creepy place
- Come on in, what the heck
- Fall right down
- Break your...
- Face.
- Duloc is, Duloc is,
- Duloc is a creepy—
- place!
Shrek the Musical[]
[Duloc Dancers]
Welcome to Duloc, such a perfect town
Here we have some rules, let us lay them down
Don't make waves, stay in line and we'll get along fine
Duloc is the perfect place
Please keep off of the grass, shine your shoes wipe your face
Duloc is
Duloc is
Duloc is the perfect place
[Duloc Dancer]
And here's the man who made it happen
That towering colossus of moxie
Lord Farquaad
[Lord Farquaad]
Oh it's you
What a terrific surprise
Once upon a time
This place was infested
Freaks on every corner
I had them all arrested
Hey nonny-nonny-nonny-no
If you had a quirk, you didn't pass inspection
We all have our standards
But I will have perfection
And so
And so
Things are looking up here in Duloc
[Duloc Dancers]
Just take a look
[Lord Farquaad]
The things I'm cooking up here in Duloc
[Duloc Dancers]
He likes to cook
[Lord Farquaad]
A model that amazes
A plan with seven phases
[Duloc Dancers]
Bum bum bum bum bum
[Lord Farquaad]
Things are looking up here in Duloc
[Duloc Dancers]
They're looking up
[Lord Farquaad]
In Duloc
The ladies all look swell
The men are so dashing
Thanks to my new dress Code
The fashion's never Clashing
Hey nonny-nonny-nonny-no
This castle I had built
Is taller than the clifftops
A city with a postcard
A monorail and gift shop
And so
[Duloc Dancers]
And so
[Lord Farquaad]
And so
[Duloc Dancers]
And so
[Lord Farquaad]
And so
No one from the gutter in Duloc
[Duloc Dancers]
He's takin' aim
[Lord Farquaad]
Embrace the cookie cutter in Duloc
[Duloc Dancers]
We're all the same
[Lord Farquaad]
The upshot is enormous
When you can shout
[Duloc Dancers]
Conform us
[Lord Farquaad]
Yes
Things are looking up (Things are looking up)
Here in Duloc
Hey, let's hear it for those Duloc dancers
Aren't they terrific?
There's no sign of slowing
We're growing, we're growing
[Duloc Dancers]
Look, he's growing
And growing
And growing
Look at him grow
[Lord Farquaad]
Things are looking up here
[Duloc Dancers]
We practiced this part both forward and back
We make one mistake, and we get the rack
[Lord Farquaad]
Things
Are looking up here
[Duloc Dancers]
He taught us to dance with razzamatazz
He's trained in ballet, flamenco and jazz
[Lord Farquaad]
My hard work and my rigor have made me so much bigger
Things are looking up
[Duloc Dancers]
Things are looking up
[Lord Farquaad]
Things are looking up
Here in Duloc
[Duloc Dancers]
Ah-ah-ah-ah
[Lord Farquaad]
Here in Duloc
[Duloc Dancers]
Ah-ah-ah-ah
Up up
Up up
Up
Trivia[]
- If one listens carefully, the song has the exact same melody as the song "It's a Small World", written by the Sherman Brothers. Of course, the pitch is cranked and the tempo is much faster compared to Small World.
- In Scared Shrekless, the line "Shine your shoes wipe your... Face!" is replaced by "Fall right down break your... Face!" Both replace an implied rhyme from the previous line, with the word "face", except the former is a dirty joke and the latter is a dark joke.
