Development

Following the success of Shrek 2 in May 2004, Jeffrey Katzenberg revealed that the Shrek story had been outlined into five films almost from the beginning. "Before the first one was finished, we talked about what the whole story of Shrek is, and each of the chapters answers questions about the first movie and gives us an insight," said Katzenberg, "Shrek 3 and 4 are going to reveal other unanswered questions and, finally, in the last chapter, we will understand how Shrek came to be in that swamp when we meet him in the first movie." After the release of Shrek the Third in 2007, Katzenberg announced that the fifth film would be released in 2013 following the fourth film's 2010 release.

In May 2009, DreamWorks Animation (DWA) announced that the fourth film's title would be Shrek Forever After, indicating that it would be the last in the Shrek series. Later in 2009, that was confirmed by Bill Damaschke, head of creative production at DWA, with him saying: "All that was loved about Shrek in the first film is brought to the final film."

Josh Klausner, one of the writers of Shrek Forever After, explained in 2010 the script's evolution: "When I first came onto the project, it wasn't supposed to be the final chapter — there were originally going to be 5 Shrek movies. Then, about a year into the development, Jeffrey Katzenberg decided that the story that we'd come up with was the right way for Shrek's journey to end."

In a 2014 interview with Fox Business Network, Katzenberg hinted that the fifth film could still be made. "We like to let them have a little bit of time to rest," he said of the characters. "But I think you can be confident that we'll have another chapter in the Shrek series. We're not finished, and more importantly, neither is he."

Then, following the sale in 2016 of DreamWorks Animation to NBCUniversal, a part of Comcast, DreamWorks announced it would continue releasing "at least two films" per year. The first two films were planned to have been Shrek 5 and Edgar Wright's Shadows, a different take on the scrapped animated feature, Me and My Shadow.[1] In an interview with Mike Mitchell and Walt Dohrn, they revealed that Michael McCullers would write the story.[2] McCullers claimed the script to be "very personal" and "a big reinvention of the franchise." Eddie Murphy was also confirmed to have read the script, and claimed the film would release sometime between 2019 to 2020. Both projects eventually went silent, with Shrek 5 presumably shelved once again.

On November 6, 2018, it was revealed in a Variety interview with Chris Meledandri, the founder and CEO of Illumination, that Shrek 5 and a Puss in Boots sequel were in active development. Rumors circulated that he was looking to reboot the franchise with the original cast returning. Once again, news grew silent over time, with more rumors claiming that Illumination would be handling both features. There was never any confirmation that this would be the case however, and DreamWorks was still committed to making new installments for the Shrek franchise.

In May 2022, in an interview by GQ, Shrek actor, Mike Myers, expressed his interest in wanting to do more Shrek films, stating: “If I had to do one ‘Shrek’ a year I’d be thrilled”.

In December 2022, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was released. Among several cameos, an ending implies either Shrek 5 or a third Puss in Boots film. Though it hasn't been officially confirmed by DreamWorks, it is rumored and hinted that another film will likely happen in the near future.

In January 2023, in an interview with ETalk, Eddie Murphy expressed his enthusiasm in reprising his role as Donkey saying: "I'd do it in two seconds." He stated he was open for another Shrek film, or a Donkey spin-off.

In April 2023, Chris Meledandri confirmed that the fifth film was still being discussed, with Myers, Murphy and Cameron Diaz in talks to reprise their roles.

In November 2023, an intern supposedly leaked information regarding Shrek 5's release on her LinkedIn page. The page claimed that among the release of anticipated sequels such as Kung Fu Panda 4 and Despicable Me 4 for 2024, Shrek 5 would follow in early 2025. It has since been taken down, seemingly adding credibility to the proposed date. However, it is still unknown if this information is factually correct, as other DreamWorks releases such as Dog Man have been heavily implied to release that year.
