Development

In January 2023, in an interview with ETalk, when asked about the mid-credits teaser of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Eddie Murphy expressed his enthusiasm in reprising his role as Donkey; whether in another Shrek film or a spin-off starring his character, being quoted as saying: "I'd do it in two seconds".[1]

In April 2023, Chris Meledandri confirmed that Shrek 5 was still being discussed, with Myers, Cameron Diaz and Murphy in talks to reprise their roles. Around the same time, a Donkey spin-off film, which he got the idea to develop after hearing Murphy's comments, was also discussed- showing excitement at Murphy's dedication for his role.[2]

In June 2024, as he promoted Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Murphy not only updated the progress of Shrek 5 by announcing that he had recorded the film's first act for a 2025 (later confirmed 2026) release window; but similarly confirmed that a Donkey spin-off film active in development would follow the anticipated fifth Shrek installment.[3]

On July 28, 2025, while in an interview, Murphy confirmed that after the cast finishes recording Shrek 5, he will begin work on the Donkey spin-off. A story treatment has supposedly been written, which involves Donkey, Dragon, and the Dronkeys. Murphy estimates that the film will release within two years after Shrek 5.

Trivia

  • On July 30th, 2025, concept art leaked for the project. Much like the Puss in Boots films, there is a darker tone present in its visuals compared to the main Shrek series.
